Bat Box
Bat Box
This bat box provides a draught-free, warm and dry roosting space for small bats, especially common and soprano pipistrelles. These two species are the most abundant bats in the U.K. and most frequently use bat boxes.
This box is made of FSC Mix-certified, exterior-grade plywood and features a grooved landing ladder which continues internally. The 20mm entrance slot helps to deter birds.
If you would like to attract bats such as noctules, that prefer a larger roosting crevice, it can be changed to a single chamber box. To do so, unscrew the single screw holding the roof down, remove it and slide out the internal divider.
The back panel has two holes for attaching the box. Position the box as high as possible on buildings or trees and in a sunny place, sheltered from the wind. Ideally several boxes facing different directions should be put up to provide a range of conditions. Bats need time to find and explore new homes so it may be several years before the boxes have residents. Droppings on the landing area, stains around the lower parts of the box and chittering noises from inside on warm afternoons and evenings are signs of occupation.
All bats and roosts are protected by law so you should only open a bat box to check it if you hold an appropriate license.
A decline in natural habitats means our gardens are more important than ever for wildlife.
