Bat Box Kit
Bat Box Kit
The Bat Box Kit is ideal for children (and adults!) to enjoy making.
This kit provides you with pre-cut panels, nails and screws and simple to follow instructions. No sawing required, all you need is a hammer and a screwdriver.
The box provides a draught-free, warm and dry roosting space for small bats, especially common pipistrelles. This species is one of the most abundant bats in the U.K. and most frequently uses bat boxes.
The box is made of FSC Mix-certified, exterior-grade plywood and the back panel has two holes for attaching it. Position the box as high as possible on buildings or trees and in a sunny place, sheltered from the wind. Ideally several boxes facing different directions should be put up to provide a range of conditions. Bats need time to find and explore new homes so it may be several years before the boxes have residents. Droppings on the landing area, stains around the lower parts of the box and chittering noises from inside on warm afternoons and evenings are signs of occupation.
All bats and roosts are protected by law so you should only open a bat box to check it if you hold an appropriate license.
A decline in natural habitats means our gardens are more important than ever for wildlife.
