Bumblebee Nesting Box
Bumblebees are important pollinators and will successfully pollinate your fruit and vegetables throughout the season. Over winter queens hibernate, usually in a hole in the ground. In the spring the queens emerge from hibernation to find food and a nest to raise a colony.
This bumblebee nesting box provides an excellent way of encouraging bumblebees to your garden by providing them with a safe place to nest.
The nesting box is made of sustainably sourced wood. It contains an outer and inner chamber. The inner chamber comes with cotton, ideal for nest building. Ventilation is provided by a small opening covered with fine mesh. The lid can be removed to inspect the progress of the nest through a transparent inner lid.
How to use:
Site the nest at ground level, out of direct sunlight. The best time to put the nesting box out is from the end of March to early April as bees emerge from hibernation.
During the summer a colony of bees will develop, with workers foraging for pollen and nectar, during which they will effectively pollinate many plants.
As the winter approaches queens will move away from the nest to find a place to hibernate until the following spring and the remainder of the colony will die out.
To re-use the nest, simply remove the old nesting material and clean the interior. It may then be stored over winter and put out again the following spring with a fresh supply of nesting material.
