Hedgehog Nest Box
Hedgehog Nest Box
This hedgehog nest box, tested with the help of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, provides the perfect home for hedgehogs to hibernate in and breed. Made of FSC Mix-certified, exterior-grade plywood and has a non-toxic, water-based stain and preservative.
The box features a large entrance tunnel to allow larger hedgehogs in. The nesting area is safely tucked away to better avoid contact with unwanted visitors. The roof is low, making it cosier, and ventilation gaps provide just the right temperature and humidity without draughts. Runners under the box ensure it’s clear of the ground and air can flow underneath. The roof is removable for easy inspection and cleaning.
Place the nest box in a quiet, shady corner of your garden and add some nesting material like small dry leaves or wool. The entrance should be sheltered from the wind. You can also cover the outside of the house in some woody garden cuttings, leaves and soil. All this should provide them with a safe space to hibernate, possibly breed and raise hoglets.
It might take a little while to become occupied and remember that you won't see any activity between October and March/April, when they’re hibernating.
Clear out the hedgehog nest box once a year between late March to early April after hibernation, to prevent the build-up of pests. However, avoid cleaning if a hedgehog is occupying the nest!
A decline in natural habitats means our gardens are more important than ever for wildlife.
